    Linux – Dell

    Locked

    by dwyeredward1 ·

Does anyone have any advice on the best Linux flavor to run on a Dell Optiplex GX260 tower? I have Unbuntu now, but it is very slow. All the forums I have visited have advice but from like 2006! Also, it has only 1 GB of RAM. I am usually a Windows guy so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

PS – Stupid question – Would dual booting with Windows 7 slow it down?

Dual booting will not slow either OS down. There’s only one OS running at time; the one that isn’t running is just occupying hard drive space. If your drive is cramped for space or badly fragmented, that could cause problems, but that would occur with a full drive on a single-boot system.

      Try a derivative

On an older machine, I’d recommend using one of the lightweight derivatives of Ubuntu: either Xubuntu, or maybe better yet, Lubuntu. Either of those should run much better on an older computer.
