Loading Small Business Server to 30GB dr

By BarryVG ·
Attempting to load SBS4.0 to a 30gb IDE drive. After identifying partition to format as NTFS, system will load from CD-ROM and reboot. It will identify the partition as FAT, then do conversion to NTFS and then reboot. Then the system says there is no boot files. What is happening to the NTOSKRNL.EXE? What am I doing wrong? Not much hair left! Have formatted and partition drive in another NT workstation, formatted and loaded system as FAT, which worked. Have identified the CD-ROM as a different loader for large drives. This is getting frustrating!!!

Are you, by any chance, trying to load SBS on a Compaq server with a system partition (the 36meg diagnostic/utility partition). If so, it won't work and here's why:

One of the idiosyncrasies of SBS is that it MUST be installed on the first partition because it is hard-coded to look for the boot files there (unlike other versions of NT).

If you have a system partition, it must be removed and the drive re-partitioned and formatted. Then the install should go just peachy.

Also keep in mind there are some size limitations on your boot partition (generally C: drive). You may only be able to set it to 4GB or 8GB, then use additional partitions for data and apps...

Watch out for this as well: If you have any required hardware that is not detected by NT (or drivers are not on the CD), you will need to interupt the installation of the applications until you have those setup, or the system will most likely need lots of rework.

Have set partitions from 2gb to 4gb. Also sidestepped the setup to use a cdrom driver from SP4 (large drives). Found this in Microsofts knowledgebase=ArtQ197667. Load does go to drive, reboot occurs and system identifies the FAT partition, conversion takes place, then reboot, then the indication "checking DMI pool", then system stops.

GOT TO EXCLAIM AT THIS POINT. Moved drive to a different system. Reran setup with an fdisked drive. Identified the different cdrom drive, reboot identified FAT, converted, and then rebooted. Fingers crossed, it got past the second boot, and loaded into server setup. Only can think that the cleaned drive, different cmos, different system, was the step needed to take. It looks like we are on the path, only hope that it stays warm. Thanks for the input. I'm frazzled.

Usually when I solve a sbs problem , after
working on in half a night, I say:
$%@#%@45@%!%@5 sbs.

but this time, it is nt issue :-)

NT can't handle system partition bigger than 7.8 GB.
So , actually you need to partition the 30gb disk to lets say:
4gb and 26gb.
sbs will be installed on the first 4gb.
no, I wont suggest using partition magic or
other 3rd party programs to "merge" the two partitions.

just to make clear:
system partition=>where it boots from
boot parition=>wherewinnt.sbs resists.

Mark.
