Loading things during logon?

By kj7gs ·
A long time ago I saw a tweak that would keep loading everything while the logon screen waited for the username and password -- rather than stopping and waiting for user input. Anyone know how to do that? I'm using Windows XP, if that makes any difference.

Interesting

This tweak, in MHO, would be just for the basics,(even if i have never heard of such a tweak, unless of course youre referring to ones like start up revealer) since each account would have its own privileges (like a admin account would have networking but a guest account wouldnt).
be interesting to find out more of this so called tweak.

Some places to try...

by jimbobmcgee In reply to Loading things during log ...

- Adding your command/executable to the registry, at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
- Adding your command/executable to the Task Scheduler, with the trigger 'At Startup'
- Registering your command/executable as a service, with sc.exe

Of course, this is subject to your executable being able to run without user context...

Turn off services you do not need. as well as everything mentioned above
"msconfig" will help as well

Never heard of this

A quick search reveals a solution that appears to be a huge security liability:

http://lifehacker.com/5645098/make-windows-load-your-desktop-before-you-log-in

It is identical to the auto-login feature of windows which is the fastest way to get everything loaded.

Buy a SSD and do a fresh install and minimize what runs. No prob.

How would it be a security liability?

Depends what you're loading....

If you're talking about pre-loading programs such as your email and Excel before you log in, I don't think that's possible. There are variables that each program will need to start that come from within your user profile, which isn't loaded until you've logged in.

If you're talking about batch files or other utilities that do not require user interaction, your best bet would be to research running those programs as a service. SC as mentioned above, there are also other utilities that allow you to run programs as a service. These load prior to (or regardless of) user login.
