Locked up and locked out!

By jrcarver ·
An outside company attempted to take one of the systems in my charge and hook it into the WAN, which is also a part of the WWW. In the attempt, they locked the system up. I can't get in, and I'm assuming that they can't either (at least that is what they stated). What is the most logical method to break into the system and recover what was there without loosing the programming? The system was running Win 98 SE prior, and the attempt was to link with Win NT WAN and the WWW.

You don't mention how you are locked but I will give you all I know.

1. If the account is locked out an administrator can unlock your account from the server
2. Boot from a DOS or Windows 98 boot disk and Delete *.pwl from Windows directory to delete windows passwords and login again with a new user name and password just on your machine
3. Re-install windows 98 and upgrade the system
4. If a BIOS lockout you need to flush out your BIOS with to clear its memory with password and other security protection. Else temporary remove the system battery for 10 minutes.
5. Disconnect from all networks and see if you can login locally
6. Have the administrator check the settings for remote login with your profile and either recreate your account or change it to allow login
7. Are you the only one in the co with the problem or are there others. Contact them for group brainstorm and trends
8. Run anti virus software on your machine to ensure boot or operating system has not been corrupted by a virus
9. Are you dialing-in or other methods of connection - check connectivity
There are numerous other causes of lock out so give more details if any above did not help.
good luck

Locked out of 98? The only reason you need a password for 98 is to log on to a domain. Otherwise hitting escape at the prompt will give you access to all you have on the drive except for what may have been locked down by administrators/other users.

Alternatively you can pull this hard drive, install it as a slave in another system and performe the "repair" work from there. Once you are done, set it back to master and toss it back in the original system. Should work great. The beauty hereis that if it is a domain level access problem you won't have that problem when you install it as a slave on a machine already on the network.

Good luck!
