Logon Prompt Disappeared after Win98 Rei

By baronoff ·
After I reinstalled Windows 98 (2nd ed) (following program crashes and error messages) my network logon disappeared. It used to come up when I booted. Now, in order to connect to the network after a boot I need to log off from the start menu. This then brings up my login prompt and, after my password is accepted, runs the Netware login script. My network setup includes client for Microsoft networks, client for netware networks, ipx/spx compat. protocol, netbeui, tcp/ip, and file and printer sharing for microsoft networks. The primary network logon is set to client for NetWare networks

First delete on *.pwl files on your hdd. I would then go into Network Neigborhood and click on Primary Network, change it to something else, then change it back. This will fool Windows into coping files and updating itself. It should ask you to reboot, go ahead and see if it works.

The next step would to remove all protocols and adapters, then re-install one by one.

TM.

You shouldn't need to reinstall the protocols or anything else. Right-click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties. In the Primary Network Logon box, make sure that it is set to "Client for Microsoft Networks". If it is set to "Windows Logon" then it will cache the username and password and cease to ask you for it on bootup. If that doesn't work, THEN delete the .pwl files in the c:\windows directory and reboot. Upon entering Windows after the reboot, it will prompt you for a username and password. Enter it there and you should be set. Good luck!

Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q141858. The primary network logon field is incorrect. Edit the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net and delete the Auotlogon=(some number) entry. This worked for me.

If you have NT Domain, try to change the primary network logon order to Client for Microsoft Network.
If you have user's personal settings (Control Panel*Users), try to remove your user's setting and recreate it after reboot.
If you don't have both, remove your client for NetWare networks, reboot and reinstall it again.

good luck

Use Regedit, in My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACINE\Software\Mocrosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon, delete autologon values.
