Long file name error

By talgrav ·
I have a Compaq system with a 4.3 gig drive that will not boot due to a long file name error
that scandisk cannot fix and the system refuses to boot. It is running Win95.
Does anyone have a suggestion for the fix for this problem?
Thanks,
TGraves

This error has once been occurred to one of my colleague. It seems that you was really bad luck and had a serious problem. This error is always caused by viruses or improper use of an utility when you scandisk, defrag disk or disk edit. The FAT is now changed and that was the reason. Now, the work to do is to restore your data on that disk. Perhaps you can only rescue part of your data only but it may be better than nothing. I suggest you boot your computer by floppy disk or by an other hard disk (the error hard disk is then set jumper as slave), then try to copy your needed data as much as possible manually.
Hope it was not serious for you.

Hi,
Have you try use lfnbk.exe to rename long files names and save them in a file for restore after boot. This utility is on Win95 cdrom. It may help you.

Drop to a shell (oops i mean boot to command prompt only) Find the file in question by looking in the scandisk.log. Try deleting it from the command prompt by using its msdos truncated name. If not possible, try deltree on the directory in which thefile resides before copying the other files and subdirs in that directory(if you need them), then restore the directory. May work in some cases, if the allocation table is not so badly damaged.

Boot to Safe Mode (or Startup Disk, if Safe Mode won't work), then delete the file.

NOTE: NEVER RUN SCANDISK IN DOS MODE, it will corrupt your long file names and cause this problem.
