Looking for a Word to PDF converter

    Locked

    by rpatter763 ·

I have tried about 20 different versions of Word to PDF converters and have found them lacking in one or more improtant areas. I want software that converts hyperlinks, preserves formatting and doesn’t take forever to convert a file. I have tried docexpertz, click to convert, activePDF, primoPDF, p2pdf, pdf995, pdfcamp, pdf creator, pdf machine and many others that I forget. All I am looking for is software that convertss hyperlinks and preserves formatting and does it quickly.

Doesn’t Word 2007 have built-in “Save as PDF” capability?

        zPDFCreator

from sourceforge does it for me. It creats a pdf print driver. If you can send it to a printer, it PDFs it. Preservers most formatting (web pages have problems, haven’t noticed any issues on text documents)and hyperlinks.

And my word 2000 does not have native pdf ability. Adobe Acrobat filled that role. For a mere $250 to $400.

          My test results

DeskPDF converts hyperlinks and preserves document formatting but I had problems with large files (over 10mb). It got stuck in a “repaginating loop” and didn’t convert. I would recomend it for files less than 5 mb. I was hoping to find something less expensive as I only need to convert Word docs.

          Whatever you use

Try saving the doc as RTF first. Word formats are notoriously non-standard, and may cause various issues when converted to PDF or HTML.

          Is it worth upgrading?

          by charliespencer ·

Not to be a Microsoft shill, but if the formating and TOC are important, maybe it’s worth upgrading to 2007.

      Try this…

Download Open Office, open the document in Open Office then Export as PDF. It’s an open source solution that I’ve used myself several times.

        I have open office

        by rpatter763 ·

        In reply to Try this…

I have open office and the PDF converter works fine but on large documents, I have to repaginate the table of contents manually which can be a time consuming pain. Thank you for the suggestion and I will probably end up using it.

Unfortunately Google has a size limit of 500kb. Thanks for the suggestion. Just for the record PrimoPDF online will convert documents up to 1mb (http://online.primopdf.com/).

      CutePDF Writer works good……….

      by thumbsup2 ·

In reply to Looking for a Word to PDF converter

CutePDF Writer creates a “printer” (print driver), so you just print to it. It retains formatting and hyperlinks (through use of GhostScript, which it installs for you) AND allows you to set the filename and save to location. It is free, has a small footprint and doesn’t mess with anything on the system.
