Looking to share my hard drive through my router

this may be easy or completely impossible, hell i don’t know, but here’s the situation, i have a 300 gb hard drive filled with my movies and a smc (baracade g) router with a 1.1 usb port to be used for a printer, but instead of connecting a printer i thought that perhaps i could connect the hard drive to the router, and point my computer which is a laptop to the port on the router, but i don’t know how, or if its even possible to set it up like that

Rather than trying to use a port designed for specific hardware, why not just install the drive in one of the many NAS devices available?

Many network device and hard drive companies are offering drive cases that have the extra electronics in them to act as Network Storage Devices. They cost a little more than a simple USB drive adapter. But, they are designed for the task you are looking for, and many offer security for the node.
