Loss Of Groupwise Email

By mccarrols ·
A Novell 4.11 server with Groupwise 5.2 is losing about 20 % of incoming EMail.

There are 20 user licenses for Novell & 15 User licenses for Groupwise.

Most EMail is delivered OK, but there seems to be a consistant 20 % missing.

Any ideas and is the difference in license numbers, just a coincidence.

Many thanks

Sean

Check your global rules. We found out that
the previous network supervisor had set a
global rule that deleted all mail in the
inboxes after a set amount of time.

GroupWise doesn't care about the number of licenses, so don't waste your time looking in that direction.

You need to provide some more information to get specific ideas, but:

Watch the GWIA and track messages that are incoming. Look for errors in receiving messages such as TCP read/write errors. If you see errors (you can also look at GWIA stats to see if the errors have been accumulating).

IP read/write errors are the most likely cause of random failures that I have seen.

Allowing fragmentation of IP packets usually helps

set always allow ip fragmentation = on

If you don't see that problem, you'll need to track the messages through the MTA and POA to find an issue.

As per the previous response, more info is required. Have you checked the gwprob directory for incoming messages?

I had a similar problem a while back and in turned out that the server had hardware problems (hard disk drive). As soon as we replaced it we didn't lose any mail. Might be worth trying a vrepair on the volume where the GWIA is installed.
