Lotus Notes ACL precedence

By seilheim ·
Please clarify a recent Lotus Notes tip techrepublic sent me.

Lotus Notes help indicates that "The access level assigned to the individual name takes precedence over the access level for the group, even if the individual access level is lower than the group level."

But techrepublic's tip stated "ACL ENTRY PRECEDENCE: Notes always overrides the user's access rights with the Group's if the or she is listed in the ACL both as an explicit user and a member of a group. Since this user is part of a group that's only been granted Author access, Notes assigns that access level instead of the explicit definition. "

So how does Lotus handle the ACL?

Lotus Notes Help is correct. The TechRepublic tip is WRONG.

Individual name takes precedence over whatever access the user might have as a member of a group even if the group rights are higher.

Things get a bit funnier when it comes to roles. Again if a user is named individually in the acl then whatever roles the user has take precedence over groups but if the user is not listed individualy in the acl and the user is in a number of groups in the acl then the user gets all the roles combined from each of the groups the user is in.
