"Mail" vs "Mail and Fax" in Win 95/98 Co

By lmike ·
How can a "Mail" application in Control Panel be converted to a "Mail and Fax" application (I've tried the obvious, such as installing fax services) to remedy the following problem?
Some of my Win 95 systems have a "Mail" icon in Control Panel while others have a "Mail and Fax" icon. When in an application such as Excel or Word and attempting to generate an e-mail with the current document as an attachment using the "Send" option on the File menu, those systems that have the "Mail" icon get an error, "The form required to view this message cannot be displayed". Those with the "Mail and Fax" icon work just fine; the blank e-mail message comes up with the document attached.
This is in a Netware 5 environment with GroupWise 5.5. and both the "a" and "B" versions of Windows 95.
Of course, I would also like to know what I did to cause this difference in the systems messaging configuration.

The simplest solution would be to navigate to the "Windows Setup" tab in the "Add/Remove Programs" applet of "Control Panel" and remove check marks for "Microsoft Mail" and "Windows Messaging" click "OK" to uninstall. Then reselect them to install them. This insure that all computers have Win95 messaging components. The downside to this is that you would have to set up "Microsoft Mail" for all these computers. At most it will insure consistant configuration. Consistency is the key to easy management.
Proceed with caution as you may also have to reinstall the groupwise clients.

To answer your last question. My guess is that some computers had "Windows Messaging" already installed while the others did when the installation of Groupwise occured.

I would check to see if dial-up networking is installed on those machines that have the "mail and fax"

If you have installed Outlook 97 or MS Exchange client, you will have a mail and fax icon. Outlook 98 and above only give you a mail Icon. I think that the MS Forms fix utility is needed here, but if you want the mail and fax Icon back you need to remove Outlook, Install Exchange with MS Fax, then install Outlook 97 over the top.
