Managing Front End of Access XP DB

By learneverything ·
I am about to split the first of many databases that desperately need it. This DB will be used at 35 stations in the office. I get the concept of what is stored on the server and what is stored on the user's hard drive. Since we will frequently need to make design changes to the
front end, I'm looking for the best, simplest and fastest method of distributing the most recent version to users.

I learned in a chat room yesterday, that some people include a table in both the front and back ends that holds the version number. On open of
the front end, it compares the version number. If they match, everything proceeds as usual. If they don't match, the user sees a msgbox that the database will be closed for updating. After that, theylost me....

I'm told that code exists to update the user's front end and doesn't need push technology, but I haven't found an example anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks for your help.

I'm using Access XP and WindowsNT 4.0.

You won't find any code that you can use straight out of the compiler without modification for your system and database but look at www.net-language.com/webdeveloper
www.devx.com/dbzone/ as they have almost everything database related including source code. To implement version control for split databases reference http://users.bigpond.net.au/abrowne1/ser-09.html Just the SQL update command http://www.net-language.com/ProcessShowCode.asp?i=1780 MS has a nice way of updating Access databases using Frontpage http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q240090
The closest implementation to that discussion you mention that has open source code I can guess at would be http://www.ssw.com.au/SSW/Methodology/CheckForTheLatestVersion.asp http://www.netfolk.co.uk/netfolk/access/dbans.html

Electrokungfu, I ended up finding a way to do this with a batch file and forgot to cancel this question. Sorry. I appreciate the resources. I didn't know about many of these. Thank you.
