Manually update through WSUS Server?

By tim.hurley ·
We have a WSUS 3.0 server here and I want to be able to manually run MS Update on a workstation and have it download directly from our WSUS server and NOT from microsofts update site. Anyone know if this is possible and if so, how would one accomplish this? I did read through the wsus 3.0 documentation but found nothing regarding this.

thanks

Apply the policy

What you need to do is move the Computer account to an OU where your Windows Update policy applies, then run GPUPDATE on your computer and in a few minutes it should display the yellow update shield in the system tray for updates ready to install...

Try This

Hi Tim,
What you can also do to instantly get the updates from your internal WSUS server is log on to your client machine, start a command promt enter "wuauclt /detectnow" and press enter. After a few minutes you should see available updates or the yellow shield in your system tray. I hope this helps.

Manual updates from WSUS

by PsyCr0w In reply to Manually update through W ...

Make a update.bat file:
REM ---------------------------Start--------------------------------
@echo off
Echo This batch file will Force the Update Detection from the AU client:
Echo 1. Stops the Automatic Updates Service (wuauserv)
Echo 2. Deletes the LastWaitTimeout registry key (if it exists)
Echo 3. Deletes the DetectionStartTime registry key (if it exists)
Echo 4. Deletes the NextDetectionTime registry key (if it exists)
Echo 5. Restart the Automatic Updates Service (wuauserv)
Echo 6. Force the detection
Pause
@echo on
net stop wuauserv
REG DELETE "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /v LastWaitTimeout /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /v DetectionStartTime /f
Reg Delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /v NextDetectionTime /f
net start wuauserv
wuauclt /detectnow
@echo off
Echo This AU client will now check for the Updates on the Local WSUS Server.
Pause
REM ------------------------------End-------------------------

then when you want to manual update, double-click the update.bat
