master browser election

received 2 errors on a PC attached to an NT 4.0 server
1. when booting the PC "No domain server was available to validate
password. You may not be able to gain access to some network services"
2. in event viewer on the server regarding this same PC "master browser has received a server announcement from the computer sls30 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_E100B1.
The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced."
There is one server in one domainwith approximately 20 users. Why is this happening and how can I correct it?

Your first error "No domain server was available to validate password" is normally a sign (if everything is fine with your network connectivity) that you are having a netbios name resolution issue. Is your PC configured to use WINS or did you put aLMHOST file on it? If not, this would cause that error. You can test this by pinging the computer name of your server. If you don't get a response this is your problem.

Your second error should not be causing you any difficulty. Your server should basically club the workstation over the head because by default, your PDC is always the master browser.

Good luck!

Part one: Put an lmhosts file on the PC with your PDC's IP in it. There is a sample file on how to do it in your windows directory.
Part two: On the PC go into the "file and printer sharing" properties box in its network control panel. There youwillsee a selection for "Master Browser" select "Disable" You will not get this error on the server for that PC anymore. Do the same for all PC's on the network.
