mbnje.exe file missing

By Singpat ·
I have an e-machine which will no longer execute any files. Whenever I try to run an executable file I get the error message that Windows cannot fine the file named mbnje.exe The message says this file is needed to open applications! I have neverheard of this file and can't even seem to find it on any other machine. Any ideas? Oh I also am unable to recognize my CD drive so I am unable to re-install Windows.

Just a suggestion: do a search for mbn* files just to see if you can get a handle on which program is using this file. Also do a Registry search for same(without the star). As for your CD, delete it from Device Manager and reboot. If it's ATAPI compliant Windows should be able to enumerate it. MSCONFIG, done under Start/Run, will show you what goes on at startup. Uncheck ALL boxes and reboot.

My guess would be a virus or other baddie. I haven't heard of the file before and a search onmy windoes machines doesn't turn up anything similar. Have you checked for a virus yet? Try using the "rescue" disk set and doing it from a "clean" boot.

Unfortunatly because my CD isn't being recogonized that doesn't work. I know it must be some type of virus but I can't find a fix for it!

Well, do you need to save anything on the drive?
If not, you could "format c:\mbr" (I think that's the right direction of slash) and wipe the whole thing. Then reboot from a clean Win98 boot disk and re-install.
If you do need to save data from the drive, you could use someone else's machine to make a rescue disk (3 1/2")from Norton'a Anti-virus or one of the others and use that to try and clean your drive. Those are the only options I can think of. Good luck!

Been there - done that ! Didn't work. NO .exe files are working. I can't even get into my desktop. I can't use my access or even the Visual Basic I have! I am at a loss and I think the hard drive is also. What a mess! Anything on the drive (datawise) I have either sent to myself or backed up on diskette. Oh well thanks for trying!

Greetings,

It appears that the file is not part of your OS, and you say that it doesn't refer to any of your applications. It does indeed sound like a virus. And since you can't locate any fix for it, your only alternative may be to reload the operating system and applications.
