McAfee Reinstall Problems??????

Has anyone solved the reinstall issue for McAfee Viruscan & Personal Firewall? It appears that there?s a wide spread issue with downloading software from McAfee. We?re getting an Error Massage that there is a ?system error and the downloads do not proceed. In my personal case I even reformatted my main drive and installed a clean load of Win 2K Pro no other software. Same Problem occurred. I spent two ?chat? sessions with McAfee Tech Services with no solution. The case was elevated to the next level and an E-Mail from somewhere in India didn?t solve the issue either.

The questions is ?who else is having the problem and has anyone found a fix??

Assuming that you've done the steps here:

I would call them up and refuse to be placed on hold or called back and ask to speak with a technical manager till they get the issue resolved. Complaining clients that appear to be able to influence business purchasing decisions get moved to the FRONT of the line...

It is not clear to me when you are getting this error. Are you having problems installing McAfee, are you having problems downloading the software from McAfee, or are you having problems downloading the updates from McAfee?

Long Story

It appears that if you try to download a reistall for McAfee Personal Firewall or Viruscan, McAfee's download manager hangs up and give you an error that says it encountered a "System" error and halts. As I stated in the original post this was into a totally clean Win2K load but XP users are having the same problem. If you have a subscription service with McAfee you have to download the software and it doesn't work.

McAfee has a lengthy list of manual changes to make in the Resetry and cookie files but it does not solve the problem.

I was supose to get a call from Utah today but the phone never rang.

The bottom line is McAfee's support sytem isn't responding to a very real problem. I have e-mails from as far away as Brazil and they report the same problem.

Like to know if anyone else is going through the same thing.

I just purchased a 2 year subscription, logged in and went to download the software but it didn't work several times.

I would never have been able to fix the problem without their tech support. I can't remember exactly what the problem was on their end, but I think it could have had to do with my Pix firewall settings.

The tech gave me an alternate site to download from and that worked. I downloaded what I needed and then installed all the workstations from the network.

My advice to you is to keep trying to get to their support.

Having same McAfee reinstall problem since 1-13-05

I have been experiencing the same problem updating the McAfee virus scan (9) and Personal Firewall since 1-13-05 on a Win98 system. The download currently stops at about 53% overall. The last file downloaded seems to be the Constants file. The error message is "An error occurred . . " It is not more specific about WHAT error occurred.

I performed all the checks McAfee suggested in several "chat" sessions. These included settings for Internet Explorer (Active X, cookies, temp files, etc). I did a system file integrity check (on over 1600 system files). I did an Ad-Aware scan. Then a special McAfee virus scan from DOS (took about 14 hours). No problems were found anywhere. After that, I was moved to Level 2 support.

I haven't heard from them since.

I think I have had this problem like this twice before, but not quite in the same way. The first instance, some years ago, I managed to do a successful re-install after a lot of manual work on the computer as per McAfee instructions. The second instance many months later seemed to fix itself after I waited a few days and re-attempted the latest update.

But this time, nothing has worked. McAfee is apparently clueless on this one so far.
