This is a matter of preference if you want to ugrade the memory later then you want to use the 512 stick, the only reason I would think that 256 would be better is that I maybe could save a few dollars on the two sticks,it is basically a preference rather than meeting any specs.

One stick or two?

As soulrider said, it is basically a matter of personal prefference.
Often, 2 256MB sticks will cost less than 1 512MB.

One thing to think about is your operating system.
If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, I would think about the single 512MBto allow for adding memory.

If you are using windows 9X/Me, your OS may not even install and boot with a single 512MB RAM.
There is a bug in Windows 9X, and it often locks up and thinks it is out of memory if more than 511MB of RAM is installed.
I limit my 9X boxes to 384MB to avoid this problem.

Cost really is the only issue here. Do whatever is cheaper but get Kingston RAM. Dual sticks vs. single is really no difference as far as the system is concerned. Personally, I'd go with the single 512M to keep more slots available for future upgrades. I'm always upgrading whenever there's extra cash hanging around and like to have room, y'know?

all the answers are sound and i don't think theres going to be any different answers, just veiws of opinions to money, space and preference. but the prespective to look it at is, money; there will be always asmall cost differnce, time; if there isn't a time issue between uprades i'd buy two 256's because inthe forseen event of ram crash/fialure atleast you've got one stick to fall back on, you'll find most standard boards only go up to approx 1.5gb. so up grade is to your preference.
