In the IIS resource kit there is a visual basic script that will backup the metabase for you. With a little modification it can be taylored to fit your needs.

Metabase Backup

by Humse In reply to Metabase Backup

When IIS starts, it loads the metabase into memory, where it is available until IIS shuts down. The metabase is stored in a special format file by default named metabase.bin in the Inetsrv folder where IIS is normally installed. The metabase always stay in memory while IIS 4.0/5.0 is running. The metabase configuration file is updated only when IIS 4.0/5.0 services are stopped.

As the metabase is in memory Backup Exec can only do a backup of the metabase.bin files which is on the hard drive, but it is possible that this file is not up to date regarding the IIS 4.0/5.0 configuration which is in memory. Therefore after a restore, the metabase file on hard drive doesn't match the IIS 4.0/5.0 configuration, and so error messages regarding ftp, http, smtp occur.

Steps to do a backup of metabase:
1. Open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
2. Expand the Internet Information Server snap-in under Console Root.
3. Right-click on the name of your computer.
4. Select the Backup/Restore Configuration option. This will display a dialog box that allows to make a backup file of the entire IIS 4.0/5.0 metabase for that computer.
5. After backing up the metabase, close the MMC.
6. The backup file is created in the folder <%System_Root%>\System32\Inetsrv\Metabak folder with the extension .mdx (x is a digit). Therefore it is vital to include the <%System_Root%>\System32\Inetsrv folder to the backup.

To restore the metabase:
1. Stop all IIS services, and other services that rely on IIS (such as third-party applications or Microsoft Site Server).
2. Rename the file Metabase.bin to Metabase.bak.
3. Copy the backup file from <%System_Root%>\System32\Inetsrv\Metabak to <%System_Root%>\System32\Inetsrv
4. Rename the backup file to metabase.bin.
5. Restart the computer.
