Microsoft 98SE freezes - still

By kimba1031 ·
I am still experiencing freezes. I have emptied out my temp internet files. It was full. I have also gone into msconfig and did the diagnostic startup routine. This freeze thing is still happening. Any other suggestions?

Turn off Office Find fast (if you have Microsoft Office it should be in your start menu remove this.) If you have ADSL get a firewall application. Defrag your harddrive.

First, if your workstation is networked the common fix is to download the fix from the Windows Update site which works in most cases for both networked and stand alone machines.

If you are on a network and are using the Internet connection wizardto connect using a single modem you may have to use a proxy server or if this option is too pricey try picking up Internet Manager software from Elron. This can be found at www.internetmanager.com.

Usually its a driver issue.

Remove drivers/hardware one at a time, use MS drivers if possilbe (eg. Video drivers are the usuall culprate). Use an ISA video card to test.

Disable the sound card drivers, update your nic drivers, though these usually don't freeze the machine.

Also if you are getting freezes (not blue screen errors), this usually is is HARDWARE, not software. If you are getting blue screen error these are usually SOFTWARE problems, in general.

I am having a hard time with this. I agree it to be the video drivers. It caused me a problem when I first got the computer. PhotosuiteII...caused some major problems for me. What is an ISA video card and how do I use it to test. I updated my nicdriver and all the other little pointers I got here but am still having the problem.
