MICROSOFT AU THROWS WINDOWS 7 CUSTOMERS TO THE WOLVES?

By CALLOHAN ·
I recently bought windows 7 professional edition and loaded it on my mac using bootcamp. All worked well but when I logged in to use it the system a while later i got a message that said it had to be registered again, then said my copy was fake then blacked desk top screen.

so i called microsoft they said no problems we put you on to one of our technical people . the tech with my permission remotely scanned my computer and told me the problem was spyware and could fix it in a couple of minutes
Then the sales pitch $149 , $299, $399 and obviously my uneasy feeling. I hadn't used this os on the web so how could it have viruses or spyware so i copied our conversation and ended it.

It turns out the tech wasn't from microsoft but from "MY TECH GURUS" which microsoft certifies but doesn't tell you it is passing you over to an outside company which you inturn let peruse your computer thinking it is a microsoft technician . Very scarey !!

End result ; I went to my local computer store and explained my situation and how microsoft support had handled my problem. They laughed but said lucky you were suspicious , your computer hasn't got any spyware simply an install gliche so reinstall and should be fine and it was and the help was free.

I am concerned that i think microsoft support puts you into a situation were you are likely to be riped off though.

Is this normal?. If it is i'm glad my core imformation is on an apple system.

You know, it's a small task to put fake contact information out, then wait for the marks to phone in.

I GOT SCAMMED

by CALLOHAN In reply to MICROSOFT AU THROWS WINDO ...

The number i rang for microsoft support was 1800 225 492. i tried it again tonight after seeing hal and ansu's postings. They answered with indian acsent "my tech gurus how may i help you" BINGO! so i was scammed.

Now for the benefit of others i'm trying to think where i found the number for support and i'm sure it appeared in a pop up window saying my copy of windows was not genuine and to contact microsoft support the 1800 number given. Thus it seems there was something in my system that shouldn't have been.

Apolagis to microsoft au.

I have full transcipt of typed conversation with tech gurus if anyone is interested
other than that thanks to the hal9000 and ansugisalas

Those popups are nasty

Always double-check the phone numbers... if they don't match up with what you find on the official homepages, don't call.

Another thing you might want to do, contact you phone company to tell them about getting scammed into calling a bogus helpline, that helps if you get a huge bill later on, because these bozos might run more than one scam at a time.
