migrating Outlook Express user

By mkfME ·
I've set up an XP PC with Outlook 2000 for a user who was using Outlook Express 6 on a Win 98 box. I know how to to export messages via pst files from Outlook to Outlook - how do I do the same thing from Outlook Express to Outlook 2000?

Thanks!

The first tiem you run Outlook 2000 it should detect the OE installation and ask you if you want to migrate its information over.

The Outlook 2000 and Outlook Express installations are on separate PCs and they aren't networked. I need to be able to export the mailbox files, whatever they are for Outlook Express, to a CD and then import into Outlook 2000.

The long way would be to drag all of the messages from the OE window into a folder on the drive. Then drag them all back into the Outlook window.

The Outlook Express files are stored as .dbx files.
There is 1 DBX file for each OE folder plus 1 for the folder configuration.

In Windows 98, the files should be at:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\{a string}
or a path to that effect.
(I'm on an XP box and the path is different)

Copy the dbx files onto portable media, or transfer them using a data link.

Then, from Outlook, select Import and follow the menus to import mail from Outlook Express.

I have had to do the same thing and its a pain. How I got around it, is I first exported outlook express from the old system to the new system. Once this was done, I then setup outlook2000, and migrated the express over. It worked! If you need more details let me know and I will verify all the steps I took. Hope this helps. I tried many methods and this seemed to work best. What I liked is once I got the express over to the new system, outlook2000 reconized I had an express installtion and imported pretty much automatically !
