Missing desktop icons

By davkay1 ·
In Windows98, all icons and tool bar are missing when I bring up the computer in standard mode. I can bring it up in safe mode and all icons are there. I scanned for a virus, there is none. This is another persons computer. They said they were on AOL, shut it down then turned it on the next day and no desktop. The only thing that does show up is the mouse curser. Any suggestions??

Right click desktop.
Uncheck "veiw as web page"
It sounds like an active desktop setting.
Freaked me out the first time I saw it.

I would suggest that it is not the Active Desktop setting as that would not cause the toolbar to vanish. One of my Clients uses AOL and has had similar problems when not shutting down the system properly. The way I circumvented this interesting problem was to reinstall the OS from the DOS prompt which restored any files that had been corrupted in during the improper shutdown. Hope this helps.

It has nothing to do with Active Desktop. You have most likely enabled profiles. When you log into the windows 98 machine you are using a desktop that is defined in C:\WINDOWS\PROFILES\%USERID%\DESKTOP\. When you go into safe mode you are seeing the Desktop defined in C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP. All you need to do is disable profiles or copy the Desktop folder and Start Menu folder from C:\WINDOWS to C:\WINDOWS\PROFILES\%USERID%\. You will see the same icons from then on....granting that you do not change icons in safemode or when you bypass login.

You can disable profiles in the controll panel under Password. Make sure that the "All user's of this computer use the same settings and deskrtop" option is checked.

Hope this helps!

Try the simple solutions 1st. If you've tried the Deselect Active Desktop option and it did not work, try START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, TWEAK UI. Select the repair tab then select "Rebuild Icons". It's time to look at some of the more difficult solutions if these two simple tips don't work.

I would also suggest that your icon cache might be corrupted. If you have TweakUI, go to the Repair tab, and select "Rebuild Icons". You will then be prompted to reboot your machine. When it reboots safely into Win98 it should take care of the problem. I've had this similar problem occur and this colution took care of it.
