Mixed SGI Irix and Linux NIS config

By tdrsubs ·
I set up a simple NIS domain with 5 SGI Irix 6.5 boxes: one NIS master server, one NIS slave, 3 NIS clients. Tried to add a Red Hat 8.1 Linux client.

/etc/hosts files look good everywhere. Double-checked the spelling of the NIS domain name everywhere. All look good.

Linux client thinks the NIS master is not running ypserv (on SGI boxes it's named 'nsd' but has the same function). But the SGI subset runs just fine.
What's my next troubleshooting step? Or if someone knows the whole solution, that would be nice, too.

# ypset lucky
lucky not running ypserv.
#

root@linux0241 root]#ypbind -debug
parsing config file
Trying entry: domain compchem.mynis.com server
lucky
parsed domain 'compchem.mynis.com' server 'lucky'
add_server() domain: compchem.mynis.com, host:
lucky, slot: 0
[Welcome to ypbind-mt, version 1.11]

ping host 'lucky', domain 'compchem.mynis.com'
host 'lucky' doesn't answer.
Signal (2) for quitting program arrived.
