Modem cannot detect dialtone - Help

By sharathsr ·
I installed a Cendyne 24X CD/RW with Nero 5.5 on my computer (a Presario 5070). The CDRW was configured as Master on the secondary IDE connector. I did not need to install any special drivers as Windows 98 auto detected and installed the requisite s/w for it. However, there was an IRQ conflict with the COM2 port on which the Modem was installed. I manually corrected this but windows still said the modem connection test failed. I downloaded the latest modem drivers from the Compaq website and this time, Windows Device Manager diagonized that the Modem was working properly.

But when I try to connecto the internet or more specifically, when I open the ISP application (netzero in this case) I get a message that says - 'Modem cannot detect dialtone or line is busy'.

If I retry, I get an error message 'Port Already Open'.

When I try to diagonize/test the Port connection thru Device Manager, it says 'This device is working properly'. However, my modem never gets to dial the number and keeps giving this message. I am not sure if the CD/RW has anything to do with it - however, this problem cropped up after installing the CD/RW.

Also, my floppy drive is not being recognized any more.

I would really appreciate any help in this regard. Thanks.

Modem cannot detect dialtone - Help

Sounds like you still have some resource conflicts.

Start by removing and disabling any devices that you do not use/need. (Comm ports, IR port, etc)

For the floppy, make sure that report/seek new floppy drives is enabled in both BIOS settings, and in the drives tab of system/performance.
I would then remove the IDE devices and hubs from device manager, and then reboot and let Windows re-install the hardware.
You may need to re-install the chipset drivers for the motherboard.

For the Modem, I would uninstall all modems from control panel/modems (not from device manager)
Shut down,
Remove the modem,
Boot up.
Note: some modem mfgs require that the driver be installed before the modem is installed.
Shut down,
Install the modem, and re-boot.

If you are still having problems, I suggest you disable IRQ steering, and allow Windows to re-assign IRQs. Then re-enable IRQ steering.

This article describes IRQsteering. There is also a how to article for disabling IRQ steering, but I do not have the number or link.

Remove any spaces from the pasted link.

i like the first answer, but have you try switching the phone cord around in the modem? Sometimes it may be that it's connected to the wrong plug.

If your floppy is not being recognized you might have a loose conection on the drive. Check all connections and reboot.
