modem on unix

By udaya ·
We have a sco-unix system v rel 5.02 installation. We need to know how to install a US robotics 56k faxmodem with personal voice mail so as to connect the system to the internet. we have followed the installation procedure mentioned in the "sco unixinstallation of modem " documentation. on issuing the command "cu -ltty1a dir" the system makes a beep sound and them displays disconnected. we need to know the full installation procedure for the mentioned modem.

The command should be "cu -l ttyila dir" a space between the "l" switch and the device "ttyila".

Try that.

Ensure /usr/lib/uucp/Devices has the line
Direct tty1a - 9600 direct
ensure the port is disabled
disable tty1a
Then issue the cu command again
cu -ltty1a

I agree with the added space in
cu -l tty1a dir. USR has 2 different types of modems, you can tell by seeing them in advertisements having similar features but a different price. one, the "winmodem", is cheaper to build and has what used to be firmware replaced with (proprietary) windows software. this type won't work well, if at all with UNIX. check the box, docs, and card itself for a "designed for windows 95/98 logo, that's the key that you have a winmodem and will need to exchange it for the more expensive modem. I went through this with LINUX, same thing almost.

In my emperience with SCO Unix and USRobotics modems, I have found that cu will "disconnect" you if the cable you are using is not a full modem control cable. If this is the case, I've found that forcing DTR on the modem will allow you to use "cu".
