Monitor blinking off for a second then back on

By rvsullne ·
I have a Dell Dimension 4550 computer. I have Windows XP with Service Pack 2. I install all updates from Microsoft. I have Spyware Doctor and Norton Internet Security 2008.

My problem is, my monitor has suddenly started blinking off and then back on. This is happening quite often. I have checked the monitor cable and it seems to be tight. What else could it be? Is there a way I can find out what is causing it? My tv has been doing the same thing but Time Warner said they are not connected. This is really bugging me.

re Monitor and TV both blinking off?

Have you checked the electricity lately? Too many things on one circuit? Brownouts can cause this.

I certainly hope you have the computer plugged into a UPS (uninteruptable power supply with battery). Brownouts can and will cause damage to the computer, eventually.

You have a voltage supply problem

by OH Smeg In reply to Monitor blinking off for ...

This could result from having too many things plugged into 1 circuit or you could be toward the end of the Mains Distribution Line and are suffering Brownouts. Of course if the entire grid is suffering Brown Outs there is nothing you can do to cure the problem except adding UPS's as suggested above.

But if there is no major Supply Problem where you are you can look at the Supplied Voltage. Most Electrical Supply Companies are legislated to supply Mains Power within a certain range of voltages, if the supply falls outside these they have to cure the problem which may involve running a new Power Line to the Mains.

However if this is brought about by Extreme Weather Conditions you may just have to live with it till the Ice Malts or whatever else is causing the problem.
