monitor goes black after windows startup

By mary ·
It's a Packard Bell 833CD. Windows 95
starts up and you see the logo a couple of
times, then the logo goes away and the
monitor goes black. No hourglass.
Nothing.

I cannot start up from the CD. If I use the
startup floppy to start up, the CD drive is
not recognized. The CD drive is not
recognized in Windows Safe mode,
either. So I don't know how I can reinstall
Windows, which seems like what I need
to do.

It's possible some RAM has gone bad,
but I don't have any extra lying around and
hate for the client to buy it if it's not
needed.

Any ideas?

You have your resolution set too high for what the monitor can handle.

You should be able to just boot it into safe mode and cahnge the resolution to something reasonable (like 800 by 600).

IF that doesn't work, again, go into safe mode, make a note of what the display adapter is, change it to a standard VGA and reboot. When you're back into windows change it back to whatevery it was before.

Good luck to you

This doesnt sound like a RAM problem. Do you know what kind of CD-ROM you have? To get it to run in dos you have to finagle both the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files so that it will recognize the CD-Rom in DOS.
Try finding out what the CD-Rom is, and getting the drivers for it. If you have DOS6.22 installed then you can find out how to edit config.sys and autoexec.bat by typing in 'HELP'. Try that and good luck!

I had started down this direction. It
would have been a dead end.

Sounds like it might be a video card conflict. Is it the stock computer with no upgrades? I had this problem with certain motherboard/video card combos. You should be able to create a boot disk that loads the cd drivers. Then reinstall windows that way. I don't think its a RAM issue. You would have problems booting up in general (for the most part).

It helped me think about the
problem, although the problem had
already been solved by answer #1.

It sounds like a conflict between your video driver and another driver. We fixed a similar problem by going to safe mode deleted video driver, and a few of the other drivers, rebooted then reloaded the drivers. If you need a boot disk with CDROM support you can get one from www.bootdisk.com If you need more info email me.

Gave me additional information
that I may use in the future, although I
didn't need it for this particular
problem.
