Move back from NTFS to FAT32

By abadillo ·
I was going to install win2k in this old machine but then I got the NTLDR missing file error, although I found a fix for it I decided to just load win98 in it. The problem is that the hard drive was already converted to NTFS and windows 98 runs in FAT 32. How can I reformat the hard drive so I can install win 98 in it?
Thanks for your support!

Boot to a win98 boot disk and run fdisk and clear out all the partitions. Then reset the active partition and format it normally with the format c:/s command.

Windows 98 fdisk won't erase the NTFS partition!
Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure Win98 is going to be able to delete the NTFS partition. I would let the PC boot off of the Win2K CD and at the point where you can pick the size, do a "D", [enter], "L". Basically just delete the existing partition. At that point just alt-f3 and cancel. Then go back and boot off the Win98 disk.

You got the right idea. Win98 won't delete the NTFS partition. Unfortunately I can not boot from Win2K CD because is not autorun. But your idea combined with ajsdodd's helped a lot. Thanks!

Or

Start the computer by using the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or the Startup disks.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen is displayed, press F10.
In Recovery Console, choose the appropriate installation and log on by using your Administrator password.
Type map, and then press ENTER.
Note the drive you want to reformat.

NOTE: The drive letters may be different in Recovery Console than in Windows 2000.
Type format x: /fs:fat32, where x is the letter of the drive you want to format and FAT32 isthe file system you want to use.
Type y to confirm your choice. When the formatting process is finished, type exit to restart the computer.

I did not map to the drive, I just started everything as if I was going to install win2k again, but I just quited after formatting to FAT32. Great Idea!
Thanks!

Personally, I would just get a copy of Partition Magic, and use that to convert the partition from NTFS to FAT32.

good luck
