MS IE 5.0 default mail has taken over Wo

Scenario:

Outlook97 is our INTERNAL mail client. Outlook97 works ONLY with Exchange and should in no way whatsoever work with Prodigy/IPS/Internet mail.

Two users have installed Prodigy 5.0 on their systems, including IE 5.0 and Outlook Express 5.0. On those two systems, Outlook Express 5.0 is the EXTERNAL mail client. Outlook Express 5.0 should work ONLY with Prodigy/ISP/Internet mail and is in no way whatsoever to work with internal Exchange mail.

Office97 programs such as Word97 andExcel97 need to work ONLY with Outlook97 and should not even be aware of Outlook Express 5.0. Internet Explorer 5.0 should work ONLY with Outlook Express 5.0 and should never look to Outlook97 for anything.

Problem:

Word97 and Excel97 do NOT use Outlook97 for their default mail program anymore, but look instead to Internet Explorer 5.0 (where Outlook Express 5.0 is set as the default mail client) for their default mail client information. I want to train Word97 and Excel97 to use Outlook97 as their default m

Can't be done. By definition, there can only be one default e-mail program, and that program, even if you don't have Internet Explorer installed, is chosen on the Programs tab on the Internet or Internet Options control panel.

I would suggest upgrading to Outlook 98 or Outlook 2000. These programs work as both MAPI and POP3 (and even IMAP) mail clients.

It can be done. If you go into Internet Explorer, then go to Tools/Options, select the Programs tab.

Change the default mail client to Outlook (it will appear in the drop down list). Click Ok and close all mail programs. It should work OK now, ifnot, try logging off then on again and then trying.

Lauch Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. Click on on View, Options. Select the File Types tab and look for URL:MailTo Protocol. Change the application you wish to open your mail with to the one you want, in your case that would be Outlook 97.

Hope this resolves your problem.
