Ms Messenger win XP home

By jrbigsky ·
I have MSN messenger turned off in win XP .....but I keep getting a pop up ad from MSN that reads in the top pop up line .." Messenger Service"
in the start of the ad there is who it is from with a IP address then the ad which is mostly about porn or something close like dating..
Where is this coming from and how can I stop it?

Try the suggestions from this link,

http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/windowsxp/messenger.htm

Remove any spaces in the pasted link.

There are also suggestions on how to 'fully' disable MSN messenger from links from Mark's site, or at

www.aumha.org

The messenger service is mostly used in large networks to convey messsages to a group of systems quickly. For home users, its just a service that is sitting there waiting to be exploited (like in your case and many others). I suggest you disable it. The link below describes how to do this:
http://www.lantalk.net/disable_messenger.php

Good luck with it.

Right click My Computer/Manage/expand Services and Applications then either disable the Messenger service or set it to Manual. No biggy.
