MSO97.dll Missing

By MoodySkipper ·
This is not necessarily the correct group for this question but I couldn't find Office 97. I have this problem on a number of Win98 machines.
When someone tries to open an Office 97 application (it has happened with
Excel and Word so far) I get the following message:

MSO97.dll is missing.

But when I look on a machine where Office 97 is working and find the mso97.dll and then look on the machine that claims is missing, it is there and in the correct place.
I have tried a number of options already:
1. Uninstall and reinstall. didn't work.
2. replace the .dll with a known good one from another computer. didn't work.

I have had this before but didn't find an answer and had to scrub the hard drive and start again. I can't keep doing this as it is a long process. Even ghosting hard drives is a long process.

I look forward to your replies.

Where is MSO97.dll located? c:\program files\msoffice\office?

Check the properties of your shortcuts to Word and Excel. Where are they pointing?
Also c:\program files\msoffice\office?

I bet not.

The normal search path rules for DLL`s are n program directory first, then windows directory, then system search path.

I'm guessing that your shortcuts are pointing to copies of winword.exe and excel.exe that aren't in the same program directory as MSO97.dll on the affected machines.

It looks like you have a registry problem.
download the eraser97.exe utility from the
microsoft support and run it. This file erases all the office 97 info in the registry. It does'nt delete your personal files. After you run the utility you must to restart your system and reinstall office 97.
