Multiple DNS Entries and Windows NT

By mdow ·
We have a Windows 2000 server that has multiple DNS entries associated with it. Any Windows 2000 or XP desktop can find the server by entering the dns name(s). If you attempt the same process on a Windows NT desktop it searches and comes back with a"Network Name Cannot Be Found" error for any of the DNS names.

Any ideas why ?

You have to use the full dns desciption under NT that means

machine_name.domain_name.extension_domain

Example :

if you want to connect to the server : "server1.mydomain.com" (full DNS) to the share "myshare"

you must write :

NET USEZ: \\SERVER1.MYDOMAIN.COM\MYSHARE

that short way will not do the job (NET USE Z: \\SERVER1\MYSHARE)...

NT cannot use the "short" DNS description... for that you have to use the WINS.

We do use the full DNS name (\\server.domain.us\share) but we cannot connect via the DNS name. If we use \\IP\share we can connect everytime.

Ant other ideas ?

I mean you've got serious problem with :
1) your DNS description - server
2) your configuration DNS on your PC
3) a possible problem of routing

Try installing Netbeui (netbios). Have you wins?
Chek your DNS server forwarded zones, are workstations there, are ip:s ok. Do you use dynamic updates? Check event logs.

This problem only exists on Windows NT machines. Windows 2000 and XP can access shares via DNS naming. There has to be something different in the way that NT handles NetBios but I can't seem to find it.

Why don't you just use wins?
