Muti-boot Novell+W98+NT

By talal_mofeez ·
Is it possible to have all three OS (Novell+W98+NT) in one PC ? I appreciate anyone who can give me some hints and tips on how to do that ? Any links on the net for references would be very helpful ?

Thanks for your help .

You'll need a fairly Large hard drive and install in the proper order. Here's a guideline:

10 GB hard drive with the following partitions:

- 2 GB Win9x
- 4 GB WinNT
- 4 GB NetWare

Install Order:
1. Win9x
2. WinNT, which will then overwrite the Win9x boot stuff with it's own NTLDR. NTLDR will then on subsequent boots allowing you to choose WinNT or Win9x.
3. Install Netware. To do this, you'll need to Boot to Win9x in "safe mode command prompt only"

Once the installs are all done you can edit Win9x's CONFIG.SYS to load a MENU system (like the old MSDOS 6.x boot Menu).

Here's a sample Config.sys:

REM *** Begin Config.sys ***
[MENU]
MENUITEM=Windows, Load Windows 9x
MENUITEM=Netware, Load NetWare Server
MENUDEFAULT=Windows,10
REM the "10" above = ten second countdown
REM timer before making this selection.

[Windows]
REM Put your Windows Device drivers here.

[Netware]
REM Put your Netware device drivers here
REM (probably none, except maybe a FILES=
REM and BUFFERS= lines)

REM *** END CONFIG.SYS ***

REM *** Begin Sample AUTOEXEC.BAT ***
@echo off

goto %config%

:Windows
REM Put your TSRs in here
GOTO END

:NETWARE
REM Put your TSRs in here and Netware
REM load statements
GOTO END

:END
REM *** END Sample AUTOEXEC.BAT ***

Once you've put this all in place your boot order will be like this:

- WinNT, with option to boot Win9x.
- When Win9x is selected at boot, you're given an option to load Netware.

You can make Netware your default by editing your BOOT.INI in WinNT and making Win9x your default. Then edit the CONFIG.SYS in Win9x and make Netware your default.

I've done this before, mostly for fun, never in production, and it worked like a charm. You can make all the booting easier by installing a boot manager like System Commander (www.v-com.com).

How would you like all three running at the same time? Check out www.VMware.com. You can run several virtual machines at the same time and they can all talk to each other...I have been playing with it and have a 95/98/nt/2000 and a novell server up at the same time....The software is about 100 bucks and there is a fully working demo to try before you buy.....Good Luck....Chuck
