My computer occasisionally screams at me.

Locked

by dick2124 ·

I think i have some sort of malware that makes a woman’s scream. It can be a bit surprising, if I am concentrating on something. Is anyone aware of (1) a particular malware thing that would do that, and (2) is there a package that you might be aware of that would address this issue? Sometimes it makes a grunting sound.

You could check your sound (in the sound section of your computer) and see what you have it as.
Go into the Control Panel and then sound.

I wonder if someone you know has grabbed some .wav files and assigned them to some of the more obscure system events. I’ve …um…seen this before.

In XP, check your sounds control panel, sounds tab and look at program events, or change the “Sound Scheme” to Windows Default and see if you hear it again. Now if they were really clever they might have renamed the files to the same name as the default files. You can use the control panel to play the sounds just in case.

Have you scanned with anything?
Is your AV up to date?
What processes are running? (Process explorer)

Maybe your case fans? Mine tend to scream and groan when they’re dirty or giving up the ghost.

All of my computers when they start give me the Welcome Message from the HAL 9000 and when they close down they ell me that This Conversation can serve no purpose Good by and then shut down.

They also make a variety of different noises but the one I really like is the Darlek Exterminating the contents of the Recycle Bin. I’m only sorry that I don’t have Orac telling me that it’s busy leave it alone but I must wait and hope. :0

Do you think my systems are infected?

It couldn’t possibly be that I changed the Sounds could it? :^0

But I’ve had to change about 50 computers after the people hear my NB start up.

They like it so much that they want it to instead of finding some .wav files that suit them better than mine do.

Maybe I should go into business setting up Custom Sound Schemes. :^0

Then again, I don’t know everything.

To me, it sounds like someone has pranked you.

I don’t know exactly how this prank would be executed, but you could check scheduled tasks in control panel or processes in task manager (ctrl + shift+ esc) and look for any .wmv files running while the screams are running.

Web page?

by tobif ·

In reply to My computer occasisionally screams at me.

You don’t, by chance, have some web page open in the background, which then may contain some sounds, perhaps in an ad?
