My connection to internet is dead! Win98

By PhiltheGreat ·
After a crash, my Chinese windows 98 cannot connect to internet through my broadband.
1) I can ping the ISP with ip address; but cannot ping with hostname. (When I dial the connection with the broadband software make no error responses. It seems towork well; but the browser cannot find the connections.) IE and Communicator are both not working. IE returns "cannot find the server" "The page cannot be displayed."
2) My dail-up or modem cannot work.
3) I have followed the instructions of the support and re-install the tcp/ip, network card (3Com905B-TX)(for my broadband);
4) I have re-set up the win98 with a boot-up disk and re-install the win98; but I cannot fix the problem.
5) I have searched the knowledge base of Microsoft on that; but none of them fix my problems.
6) I hope to find a way to fix the problem without formatting the disk and re-install all the software again.

Try enabling DNS under your TCPIP configuration. Even if you're getting your IP address from the router, you may be getting a bad DNS server entry. Enter the DNS hostname and the addresses of the 2 DNS servers. Good Luck!!

Sorry, I think more details may be needed for you. I am using the netvigator's broadband together with iTv which is doing fine. I use the PPPoE software provided by this company and it is 1.5M shared by the people in the same building. I cannot connect with name like: www.msn.com; and the telnet is not working too. It is totally no-internet situation.

Also insure your default gateway is set correctly. Also check the setting on your browser for correct type of internet access.
The PPPoE software is shared but do you have a unique portion on your pc. That might have an .ini file corrupted. If thatcan be reloaded and if nothin else fixes it then reload the PPPoE software on your PC.

Best of Luck
Bo

I agree with the above. The way to check is to drop to the dos prompt, and ping a known web address, that you also know the number for, www.bellsouth.net=205.152.0.20. If you can ping using the numbers, but not the name, the problem lies in your DNS. Ensure it is enabled under network neighborhood.

Thank you for your answers. But it does not work. I am using a personal computer in my home and I have tried to set the DNS (with the technical support); but it does not work; besides, what *.ini does "earnest" refer to?

You have said that the modem cannot work. Try replacing the modem. During the crash, the modem could have been affected by it.

But I use the widebandith too; but it can ping IP; but not the hostname when I connect through the 1.5M (PPPoE) connection.
