Sounds as if you have not been using the Safely Remove Option

And that the Partition Tables have been corrupted.

You can try scandisk/r from the command line or attack the drive with a Data Recovery Application that rebuilds the Partition tables.

However as you say that you have Important stuff on this HDD the only safe way to proceed here is to send the drive off to a Specialist Data Recovery House and pay them to recover the Information on the HDD. It's the safest way to proceed when there is Important Data Involved.

If however it would just be Nice to recover the Data you can try one of these

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered for use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.

If you had been able to reformat it, all your important stuff would pretty much be gone for good.

Don't worry

If you are, as you appear, a young student, there is nothing "important" on the drive. "Import" is a word that takes a lifetime -- if even then -- to understand, well beyond where you are.
