    My laptop pops and shuts down? Why

    os = xp-pro. MS office xp office suite. 1 gig processor 256k ram 30 gig hard drive. Only when I use MS word and while I am entering data on the right hand side of the keyboard does it happen. The laptop makes a popping noise and then shuts down. It creates a tmp document of the the file I was working on at the time of the popping noise. I cannot tell if this MS Word created problem or a short cut key combo that I don’t know about,but it has not happened while I use other programs.
    I am lost. Help and Thanks.

      Well, it looks like it’s definately a hardware problem. What’s the make/model of your laptop?

      If it only happens is MS Word, then I recommend that you:

      1) Go to Start Search and find normal.dot and delete it. Normal.dot is a default template file that if it gets corrupt, may cause such problems. The next time you start MS Word, the file will be recreated automatically.

      2) Test

      3) If the above fails, and Word still does not work, then go to Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs and remove the MS Office suite of programs. Reboot. And then re-install.

      4) Test again.

      To verify if this is a Word or other problem, open notepad, and start typing away.

      If the system crashes in notepad, it most likely is a hardware issue.
      With a “popping” noise, I suspect that there is a short happening inside the laptop.

      You can also try resting your hands on various portions of the case. If hand or finger preasure cause the problem, you need to get the laptop serviced ASAP.
