My PC won’t power up. Please help!

Hi I need some advice/help. I’m computer literate but not on most folks’ level that are giving advice on here. I pretty much need to get answers in layman terms otherwise I will get lost easily. I have an E-Machines desktop (model W2888) that recently went out on me. It was working fine until I shut down and unplugged it so I could move it to another room. After the move, I realized the PC would no longer power up. Per the service center’s instruction, I ordered a Power supply replacement (it has the fan attached to it). I noted the connections before unplugging them so I know where each one needed to be. Still did not work. No fan. No indication that USB is powering on (I connected two different peripherals via the USB connection on the back) as there was no light. I opened up the PC again and see that there is a green light on what I believe to be the mother board. I am thinking of taking it to geek squad at best buy but they are charging $100 just for diagnosis. Any instructions or advice you can give I would truly appreciate. Thanks and God bless!

5 V DC available from the Power Supply.

Leave the cover off and try turning it on again and see if any of the fans twitch.

If they do You have one of two options you’ve either got a bad PS and it needs replacing or when the first one died it destroyed the M’Board/CPU/RAM at the very least.

If nothing happens look at the bottom of the M’Board toward the front of the case and see where a lot of wires plug in with 2 or 4 pin connectors and look to see if there are any wires disconnected here. It’s possible the the Power Switch has been dislodged from the M’Board and this is why the Computer is no longer turning on.

      Lets know how things go.

still nothing (see below). Not sure if I mentioned but per Emachines Technical support I purchased a new power unit (with the fan attached to it) but it did absolutely nothing either.

Please check few things, is the fan inside power supply turn when you switch on the cpu? Unfortunately, No

Is the fan on the processor turn? Unfortunately, No

Is the hardisk show turning sound? Unfortunately, No

Any beeping sound when you turn on the pc? Unfortunately, No

Leave the cover off and try turning it on again and see if any of the fans twitch. Unfortunately, it didn’t do anything to the fan.

Does this help isolate the problem at all? Thanks again!

the price for new desktops are such that you can buy a new one for what you’ll end up paying trying to fix your old one. If your worried about the stuff on your hard drive, that is easily remedied. Install it on the new machine as a slave drive.

not only are prices low enough, you’ll get an LCD with it and if you watch the sales, a new printer as well. Save the pennies. Buy a new one.

Yes I agree go with a new machine as this is

Going to cost way to much to repair and as you’ll keep swapping parts till it works and you’ll be running the risk of destroying parts that where perfectly good.

From your description at the very least the M’Board is dead and most likely the CPU an installed RAM at the very least.

About the HDD I would suggest fitting this to a USB Caddy and running it from there as it can not do any harm there but if it’s added to the computer it’s possible to cause problems and corrupt Windows down the track.

About the only problem with buying a new computer is that all the Off the shelf units now come loaded with Vista so if you can find a specialist shop to build you a new computer you’ll get better parts at a decent price and they will be able to install XP with the option of you buying Vista down the track and installing it then if it ever gets to the stage of being a useful OS that supports all of the software that is run by most people.

If you have you Windows Install Password Protected you will not be able to directly access the files so you’ll need to take ownership of them by following the directions here and these only apply to an XP OS I’m not sure what the deal is with Vista but after using it I wouldn’t be counting on it to actually work for this

          http://tinyurl.com/3aw7

If you where using Windows Encrypted File System you’ll need to save the Encryption Key by following the directions here

          http://tinyurl.com/3cd8hf

Now this I do know for certain if you try to use this with Vista Home Basic it [b]Will Not Work[/b] as that version of Vista doesn’t support the EFS at all so you would have to have at the very least Vista Ultimate and even then I’m not sure that the encryption methods are the same so you would need a XP box to unencrypt the files at the very least.

if you buy one with Vista

In reply to Yes I agree go with a new machine as this is

go to newegg.com and buy the OEM version of XP Pro

$139.00 USD Wipe the drive with Vista, install XP Pro. you can always run the restore CDs later if you want to.

As I write this Dell has a Dimension E521 comes with AMD dual core 3800+, 512 MB DDR2 [get another stick for 1 GB @ $60.00 USD more] 80 GB HDD, 16X DVD Rom [no writer] Gefore 6150 LE and a 19″ LCD for $479.00 [original price $649.00 with $170.00 instant savings].

a new mainboard processor and memory is going to cost you that much if you try to fix the comp yourself. Take it to a tech, they will charge labor plus parts and it’s going to be more than $479.00 USD [plus tax and shipping].

comes with Windows Vista Home Basic… trash that for XP Pro.

So, for about $625.00 USD you get a dual core system with 1GB of memory 80 GB HDD and a 19″ LCD with XP Pro. Save your DVD or CD RW drive from the old comp, stick em in the new one. save your sound card if it’s a Creative Audigy and if you have a high end graphics card, save that. You can put em in the new system.

I read through the post but am not sure if you tried unplugging the HD from the motherboard and power supply to see if its causing a short. I have seen it happen before.
