my problem

Hi, grammatically and typographically your posting is a bit difficult to comprehend. But this solution could fit what I understand as at least part of your issue. I worked for a company w/ thousands of clients at numerous geographic locations. We needed to install software on the pc?s, which initially was only supplied on 6 diskettes, and had no network supported installation. Further, each pc also needed installatin of ODBC text software, and configuration of a standard set of ODBC data sources. And finally, this software overwrote some dlls and windows related files with older versions that were not compatible with other company systems. We wanted a way to install the software and the configured ODBC settings remotely, automatically, without deskside IT visits, and, finally, so it would not modify certain windows files. We used Microsoft?s SMS to write a custom install of just the necessary components, ODBC data sources and related windows registry updates. It ran as an executable, called other executables and was very quick and reliable.
Determing which files (dlls etc) and registry updates were in the orignal software was tracked by installing the software, ODBC software and data sources to a test pc while monitoring it with InControl software, but I think SMS had it's own installation tracking.
Depending on the facility?s needs, it was run in the client?s login script, from a link from another application or by navigating to it in either Windows Start button or the central Network file system and clicking on it.
