Need a 2-printer port PC

By lmcdonald ·
I need a PC with 2 printer ports for a department. The only thing they run is excel and they print from and excel spreadsheet to a tractor-feed printer and also a label printer.

Obviously I do not need alot of memory or speed, just the 2 printerports.

Can anyone recommend a PC? I have asked some suppliers but have gotten no response. I would like to make a purchase soon.

Thanks for the help!

Hi again! You can go to Radio Shack and just get an A\B switch box and cable. Hook the box to the LPT port on the PC and just have them switch to the printer they're using. I would just make sure that the cables are IEEE-1284 colpliant and you should be ok to go for about $50.00 including cables (if you need all new cables). =-)

That's IEEE-1284 COMpliant. The printers get hooked up to the A and B ports on the switch box.

Greetings,

Libby is right about the A-B switch box. I use them in a few cases.

However, it's a very easy thing to install an additional parallel card in any computer. Then you won't have to turn a switch back and forth. Parallel cards cost about 20 bucks (or less), and Windows will detect it, install it, and define it as LPT2. There may be some jumpers that need to be set on the card, but it's quite easy to do.

Most computers come standard with 2 serial ports and 1 parallel port, so all the "off the shelf" computer sales people don't know much more than that. Any reputable "independent" computer store could easilly add this second parallel card. If your store claims they can't do it, you should find another store. (Or be bold: Buythe computer, go buy the card, and install it yourself.)

Good luck,

Maxwell

Lizzy, please excuse my error. I called you Libby instead. The A-B switchbox is a great idea, by the way.

if your going to keep the same printers then when you get the new computer then go out and buy a LPT2 card from bestbuy or circuitcity or compusa, or any other place. that way you dont' use a switch box and they can print to both a t the same time. Also this is a good idea since using a swtich box in a lot of cases voids your warrenty with the printer MFG and the port/comtpuer mfg.

also if you are using windows you may have problems with the bi-directionalness of any printer that you have.
