Need Database Management Tool.

By flightds ·
I am looking for a database management tool which will allow me to design, emplement and maintain a database schema across various database engines.

I what to be able to manage different database engines from the same console application.

Database engines to support are Oracle, MS SQL Server, IBM DB2, MySQL, and others.

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide, and I thank you in advance for your help.

CA's ManageIT Database Admin. say's they can do something like this. I'd be reluctant to rely upon it if you ran into performance issues though. Because, each DB engine has its own specific utilities due to the fact each of those engines has it's own design fortes. For example for a high volume reliability and robustness I'd go with DB2. But for OLAP and data analysis, I'd select a sexy engine like SQL Server. Because the underlying design of each db engine is unique so are the utilities to support those db engines.

There are separate packages available for data dictionary tools, overall data mapping, and design tools. Start by looking at something like CA's Platinium. (www.ca.com/products) Platinium even generates the DDL foryou in the specified db sql syntax.

Good Luck!

Platinum Erwin is an OK tool for designing databases. I've used it for a while and I am not very impressed. If you want a lot of power and flexibility, then, you need to get MS Visio 2000 Enterprise. Check it out at
http://www.microsoft.com/catalog/display.asp?subid=22&site=10429&pg=1

MS Visio 2000 Enterprise will not only allow you to design and enhance a database but also will let you "automatically" manage network related issues associated with your databases.
Have fun!

Regretfully there is NO SUCH ANIMAL! Each database product you mentioned represents an ODBC complient database product with a 16, and/or 32 bit engine. Each follow different routes through the same standard creating their products, and while many (or any) can be emulated and/or converted there could never be a one-for-all database engine! Microsoft would have purchased it FOR SURE and would be selling it for mega-bucks if it existed!!!

Don't believe otherwise and DON"T believe any vendor that will not demonstrate any conversion you need in real time on demand. There are a few software houses that bundle many converters, but each converter is version sensitive and the bundles are HUGE!
