Need more columns within a worksheet

By sandra ·
Would you happen to know if there is a newer version of excel that the spreadsheet has more columns than my version? My version goes out to column IV - I could use more space.

Excel 97 and up spreadsheets goes 256 columns wide. It goes from A to IZ so you should have at least 4 more columns. I looked on my version of excel 97 and it looks like it ends at IV also, so there may be an update for it. Go to the Office Update page on MS website and see if there is a patch or update to 2000 XP or 2003. Sounds like for now you should break it up into a better format or go to multiple sheets.

As far as I'm aware the mazimum for a single sheet is 256 col x 65536 row.

Two thoughts spring to mind;

1) Have you considered transposing the axes?
2) Would a database be more appropiate?

I believe Quattro Pro, from Corel can handle quite a few more columns than that ....

"Quattro Pro also avoids Excel's long-standing worksheet size limitation of 65,536 rows by 256 columns, with a maximum worksheet size of one million rows by 18,276 columns."

I also think you may benefit from moving across to better database stuff, take for instance sql server has a personal edition and you can still filter it into excel without too much trouble.
