Netscape with Win95

By Spring ·
We hava a novell based NOS, with Win95 and Netscape 4.6 as OS and browser, respectivley. Recently, we get lots of 'illegal operation' messages while browsing in netscape. I am unsure what causes this problem, is't NOS, OS, or Netscape. Is there a patch that I have to download? Any help would be really appreciated.

Not knowing what type of illegal operating messages you were getting,I would suggest that you upgrade netscape to 4.7,this may help. The other possible solution would be to update service packs.Sometimes a illegal operation will happen when the system is performing an operation and another operation has not been completed and thus will give a warning.Hope this helps

You might want to try increeasing the memory and disk cache sizes in the Advanced\Cache section in prefereices. 4096 for memory cache and 7680 for disk cache seems to help some. Version 4.7 is pretty quirky itself.

Also you may need to clear your memory and disk cache under Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Cache

The illegal operation message is not Netscape specific, it can and does happen with IE5 as well. If possible, the best solution would be to upgrade to Win98 which has superior drivers for both networking and internet connection.

Meantime, run scandisk at least once a week to ensure there are no crosslinked files on your hard drive which can cause problems to running applications.
