Netware Server Dropping of Network

By david.duong ·
Novell 5 SP4 running Groupwise 5.5 SP3A on Compaq 1600 with Intel Pro100 Intelligent Server NIC.

Once every 3 weeks the server would lost connection to the network. It did not abend, everything look find, the NIC showed activities, but the servercan't ping any other server and other server can't ping this particular server. I tried running set dstrace =* on all server but this did not help. The only way to get this server back online is to re-boot. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this.

Thank You

It may not be your server.... The network cable could be bad, There could be a problem with the switch or hub, the NIC could be bad or the NIC driver is not correct. Try swapping out the cable first. Also if the hub or switch is managed look at the routing tables and see if they are filling up. Also you can get a new NIC for the server and try it out... Be sure it has a Novell driver for the NIC before you buy....

Also Groupwise is a memory hog... Be sure you have enough memory in the server. It is not uncommon for the GW server to have 500 Megs of ram or more...Good Luck...Chuck

Update your NIC to the latest drivers from Intel. I had this problem. The TID (Which I cannot find now) said NetExplorer or Managewise were causing a problem with the Intel drivers.

Uninstall Win98SE (or format hard drive).... Install Win95!!!!!!
Win 98 is great in a non-Novell network.

We had a similar problem with our Netware 3 servers, the cause was a corrupted Bindery.
If on Netware 5, it could be caused by a corrupted NDS.
Zak.
