Network administration checklist

By indimulie ·
I am a bit new to network administration. I would like experienced members of Techrepulic to provide me with a checklist of what actions to document on the server (WIN NT 4.0). if someone could provide a template to guide me through this i would be grateful.

Hi there

Your Server is very important. Consequently you MUST Document every changes made to the server.
Unfortunately I don't have access to a template for you, but note the following: Installation procedures of the Server, all SPs in order of Installation, setup procedures of all Applications installed, fixes, special configuration of ISDN, NIC, Satalite Cards, Fax cards... Everything.

Take this advise and you'll save yourself some nights.

Hope this helps.

Among many things, I always like to keep a detailed printout of Winmsd for each server. Start, run, winmsd \\servername, then choose File, print, all tabs, detail view. It could print out about 20 pages per server, but it is an easy way to document current settings.

The two previous answers are a good start.
Documentation is the key. You should know things like ip addresses, subnet mask, drivers for all of your devices, etc. I administrate several networks and documentation alone seems to take up much of my time. I typical burn a CD that has service packs, patches, drivers, documentation, etc for the network or server that I am responsible for, this makes it much easier to find the correct software in a crunch. Good Luck! (We all need a little of thatnow and then)

Change Control is an important aspect of server administration. If you intend to make a change to your server then write down what you are going to do and what you must do to return to the previous state if something goes wrong. Remember to have an upto-date backup up of your server prior to doing anything.
