network between win98se and winxp

By Seadogs ·
I have set up a home network between a win98se and winxp (NTFS) system. Both machines are connected to a hub and share an internet connection through the xp system. I can access the internet through both computers. I can see the 98 machine from xp and print to it's printers, go to its files. However I can't even browse the network from the 98 machine. I have tcp/ip and nwlink installed on both systems. Any suggestions? I'd like to be able to print to the xp's printers (which are shared) and access files. (also shared). Thanks for the help!

In order to access shares on the XP machine you need to set up user accounts and shares on the XP machine. If, like most people, your Win98 machine boots up with no logon, this will have to be changed or else you'll be prompted for a user name and password when you try to access the XP shares.

As mentioned in order for the Win98 PC to access shares on XP the login username and password must be added to the XP list of users. To do so go to the control panel and select "User Accounts" then choose "Create New User Account". Use the same login and password that is used as when win98 first boots. If there's no login and password for the win98 PC open control panel and select users and add the corresponding login and password that was added to the XP PC. If you don't want to activate seperate profiles then select the choice for all to use the same account settings.

You may want to enable the guest account, this will allow everyone to access the XP Account.

RUN the file and print sharing wizard on the XP machine or
You should have Netbios installed on both machines as well, but you also need to create a user on the XP machine that is the user and password that the 98 machine starts up with then when you browse the network on the 98 machine you should be able to access the shares that have been appointed to the 98 'user' which should be every share that is created unless you've deleted the everyone group.
