"Network Cable Unplugged"

By brownp ·
I recently performed a clean install of Win2K professional on a network machine that momentarily gives a "Network Cable Unplugged" message before returning to normal function repeatedly throuhout the day. The event viewer is full of NIC activation messages. Service pack 2 does not resolve it. I've never seen this before and MS Knowledge Base isn't very helpful so far.
Has anyone else seen this?

"Network Cable Unplugged"

Sounds like there may be a problem with the NIC driver. Check with the manufacturer that it is the most up to date version (and it's Win2k compatible), and then re-install it.

The other possibility is the Ethernet cable itself is faulty. Try using a different cable and see if that works.

This sounds like a hardware problem to me. In order of probability, I would suspect the NIC, the patch cable (and/or premises wiring) and finally the switch port.

If this machine is connected to a managed switch port, you might get some clues from that. Beyond that, this is one of those situations that is best diagnosed by substitution. That is, swap out the patch cable first (since it's the easiest), then try a different port on the switch or hub and then swap out the NIC.

Based on myexperience with similar problems, I would place my bets on a bad NIC.
