network card,can’t detect

Hello, searching the fcc# it seems I have an intel NIC.I have installed the card in Win98 system amd it won,t detect it , have tried the add remove program searched for new devices but no luck. first question shouldn’t win98 see this,have tried varius drivers I thought might work,seems it is installing but when I reboot it says NIC not installed try defferent slot ,still no good, the lights are working on card.and I cannot find drivers for this card as I am not sure what it is. FCC3EJMNPDPILA8465m , I think this is intel # 664088-003 If anyone can tell if card is no good or what I might have to do to get working would be greatly appreciated,thanks in advance.

Is the adapter ISA or PCI? Some older ISA Intel cards require you to setup IRQ’s for the card within a DOS based setup program. If the card is PCI try moving the card to a different slot. If it is an ISA card you may need to set the IRQ for the card to ISA in bios rather than PCI.

Also try removing the card then booting up without it in the system. Shutdown the system and place the card back into the system and boot back up. It should detect it then.

This sounds like an IRQ conflict.

Is your NIC ISA or PCI ?
If it’s ISA are you shure it’s Plug’n’Play, if it’s not then you need to get manual for the card so you can set IRQ and I/O address.

If it’s PCI and Win98 can’t find it ‘d say the card is broken.

If it’s ISA and in Plug’n’Play I also think it’s broken.

If it’s isa and Plug’n’Play you should get some utilitties for the card to check that it’s really set to Plug’n’Play.

That board only has an intel chip on it, but according to intel, that is not a number from their board.

I searched by that FCC ID# and no matches. FCC ID should have 17 digits total (yours has only 16 after the FCC). Win98 should detect even if IRQ conflict, so may not be plug and play (check for jumpers on side of card).

Before you begin to install drivers, try this.
In the Windows/INF/Others folder, look for any NIC driver .inf files that relate to drivers you’ve tried. Delete them. Then go to Control Panel/Network and remove any entries that refer to NIC’s or protocols bound to the NIC. Reboot and see if you get a detection.
Now if that doesn’t work, don’t rely on the Add New Hardware search. Select Add New Hardware and next through Plug and Play search. Then select “No, I want to select from a list”. Thisway you tell it you want to install a NIC and you supply the driver files. Try a somewhat generic driver like Intel EtherExpress 16 or 16TP.
Most older (ISA) NIC’s are gonna want IRQ 5 (common place for legecy sound devices, may have to disable legecy sound in Device Manager), and I/O area of 300-30F.

Another note: Intel has a Dos-based program you can run after booting with a boot disk to check the operating and do some of the setup for older Intel NIC’s. It’s called “Softset”. I believe you can still download it from their site. You just put inon floppy and run it after you’ve booted to a command prompt.

I would suggest you check out the jumpers on the card and if there aren’t any jumpers to set the IRQ then the card is definitely bad. Toss it out and go buy a new one. I bought 2 Dlink nic’s for 25 bucks at Fry’s Electronics. If you don’t have Fry’s check out your local mom and pop computer stores. They can also help.
As far as the nic being bad, well that’s hard to tell without having a second nic to run a control test. Good luck!
