    Network Design Help

    by ankenbkl ·

My project is to design, at a top level, an enterprise-wide telecommunications network for the company described below:

The Company is a worldwide company with offices in the U.S. (Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Miami), in Europe (London, Frankfurt), in Japan (Tokyo), and in South America (Rio de Janeiro). The Company is engaged in the development of audio and video special effects for the entertainment and advertising industry. The main design centers are in Los Angeles, New York, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Rio. Corporate Headquarters are in Los Angeles. The remaining offices are sales offices. Consider the Company to operate on a 24-7 basis, since it is global.

My task is to design a network structure, which will handle a constant stream of multimedia traffic between offices, with average file sizes being 25MB. Response time, any office to any office, for file transfers of this size file must be no more than 5 seconds. In the design centers, multimedia (audio and video) files are the general files worked on and average file sizes are 50MB of combined data. Response time between workstations for this data transfer is desired to be no more than 20 seconds. The Company maintains an intranet with servers in New York, London, and Tokyo. Every location must have Internet access. Full telephone voice capability with conferencing is required, with speed dialing to any location in the company.

I’m fairly new at this so any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You failed to include the number of users at each location; thus, it must be assumed that would be 500 at the sales offices and 10,000 at each main design center and with 25,000 at the coproate office.

Thus averages for maximum bandwidth utilization would be:

Number of sales branch offices X Employees X 5 MBPS + Number of Design Centers X Employees X 5MBPS + Number of Employess at Headquarters = Maximum amount of Bandwidth.

So now you can figure all that up and get your maximum bandwidth used. Normal WAN bandwidth speeds are:

      T1 – 1.544 megabits per second
      T3 – 43.232 megabits per second (28 T1s)
      OC3 – 155 megabits per second (84 T1s)
      OC12 – 622 megabits per second (4 OC3s)
      OC48 – 2.5 gigabits per seconds (4 OC12s)
      OC192 – 9.6 gigabits per second (4 OC48s)

Remember you will need fully meshed circuits and redundancy. So to make it easy, just state in the analysis that everything is a fully-redundant, fully-meshed network.

It will be stated that due to bandwidth requirements that all LAN devices and LAn Backbone will be GigE Fiber (1000 Mbps Ethernet).

ah but I don’t know of any provider that will give you city [OC48] or regional[OC194] type backbone. Might as well be a regional phone company. 5 second 25mb file anywhere at anytime world wide is on a ethernet ::shrugs:: I dunno, cost prohibited comes to mind. Gigabyte ethernet will give you that but WAN links through someone elses inter-network no ones gonna guarentee it. OC3 or OC12 but theres that pesky expense problem.

Gigabit ethernet is supposed to be the next big thing but no ones got the $$ or justify spending they $$ for it.

You need multiple full frame connections at all main sites. Audio is no problem but video is gonna cut you a new one.

Multiple T1’s at all major offices. Partal Frame connections at minor sites. I stress the term minor.

Use multiple frame providers where possible, with a load share between vendors. This will give you a failover policy.

Firewalls at all locations. Hardware, not software. The routing tables are going to be a nightmare.

Realize that if you are going to utilize voip for interoffice phones that will put an overhead on your bandwidth requirements.

For 10 voice transmissions utilizing G729 with a 20ms packet duration, 240kbps will be required. Add this with video going down the pipes, yikes!

Of course this is assuming that your system will tolerate these specs. Some phone systems will not play well at all with broken packets. One more thing on your to do list.

Gigabyte ethernet is a must! Cisco is a Must! You might even look at some fiber at the headquarters if thats where the av files are gonna live.

Multiple servers with level 6 mirrored raid for audio-video servers.

      Good Luck Dude

      Your Gonna Need It

If there are 3 sales offices with lets assume 10 employees each. And 5 main design centers with 20 employees each and 1 corporate office which is also a design center in LA.

Based on this I believe I would need approximately 650 maximum bandwidth

      My thoughts:
      Use a Client/Server LAN
Use a Star topology using Ethernet to transport data
one server in each country with the main server in LA
I?m not sure about the cable but I was thinking 10Base-5
I will probably need a hub to connect devices
So let?s figure that we need 131 desktops and 1 wireless laptop for each design center
In addition we will need routers and switches

This is just a rough draft of my thoughts. Please feel free to offer any suggestions or comments. I haven?t gotten to the actual design of the network, but I wanted to make sure I was on the right track first

Well, this all can be done, with little trouble. But when i say that, i am assuming that you will end up spending a LOT of money on this.

Like others said, you will need a few connections, i would suggest T1’s between co. Then for the main site were the video will be stored, you will want multiple t2’s or even t3’s. So you will want to have everything go through these pipes as 1 channel. So each connection will share a part of the full stream.

You really need to eval your cost, because this will be in the many many hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not in the millions.

      Also, look at cisco’s site.
