A network diagram allows you to view your network at a glance, helps immensely in troubleshooting, gives you an idea of where connectivity is on your network, and where problems may arise. It impresses management when you can throw a piece of paperat them that has a bunch of little computers and writing that they don't understand, but sounds really good. The sites given by the other person should help you out as well.

The previous links should help. But think of a network diagram as the Cliff Notes for your network. You should have several diagrams of the network. One might be printers. You can show all the printers, their names, IP addresses. If you've labeled your printers, you can walk around with the diagram and have all the info at your fingertips. The same goes for all PC's and attached devices. Also, make diagrams of your racks, labeling the servers and switches. I have color coded some of the cables, and the diagram on the door of the computer room shows where everything is, and how it's connected. It helps to troubleshoot, it helps consultants learn the network in a hurry, and my boss loves it.

Just a side note, Visio is a great tool for creating a network diagram from scratch. It even has an auto discovery tool that will go out and find your network devices, making the design process that much easier.

I have not tried Visio 2002 yet, but the 2000 Enterprise edition has everything you would need.
